Exact zestig jaar na de overdracht van Nederlands Nieuw-Guinea aan de Verenigde Naties opende op 1 oktober onze video-installatie Tabee Nieuw-Guinea. De video-installatie heeft een vernieuwende presentatievorm. In het midden van de ruimte staat een rond laag podium met rondom verschillende beeldschermen. De speciaal door mij en kunstenaar TeZ voor dit project ontwikkelde software laat de 33 persoonlijke verhalen thematisch of juist at random op de schermen afspelen. De installatie is vanaf 2 oktober voor het publiek geopend.

De bezoeker kan op deze wijze haar eigen tijd indelen en deelgenoot worden van de indringende verhalen van de 33 geïnterviewden. Hun hoogst persoonlijke verhalen zullen dus op een artistieke wijze worden verwerkt in de installatie. Het kan hierbij zowel gaan om statisch (beeld en tekst) als dynamisch (film, audio) materiaal. Verder zijn er enkele zeer bijzondere persoonlijke films, foto’s en objecten. Door de software (beeld, geluid, licht) kunnen de verschillende personen met elkaar communiceren: thematisch of beeldend (non-verbaal). Door één thema bijvoorbeeld door verschillende mensen te laten vertellen, wordt het onderwerp op natuurlijke wijze vanuit verschillende perspectieven verteld. Het wordt meteen duidelijk dat er niet één verhaal is, maar dat het verhaal voor iedereen anders is. 

Op de muren om de installatie heen is een historische tijdlijn te zien. Op deze tijdlijn staan beknopte levensbeschrijvingen en foto’s van de geïnterviewden en toont de belangrijke historische gebeurtenissen. Van de eerste buitenlander op het eiland tot en met nu waarbij de persoonlijke levensverhalen (immaterieel erfgoed) van de geïnterviewde mensen staan in relatie tot de (geo-politieke) geschiedenis.

TeZ

The TNG installation is an immersive environment comprising 7 modular audiovisual assemblies that will immerse the visitors in a non-linear storytelling dramaturgy, an ever changing “dialogue” between 30 different witnesses of the period of the Dutch in Nieuw-Guinea in the years around 1962.

Each of these modules consists of a small sound and video playback device that is remotely controlled over WiFi so that a certain video fragment can be precisely cued to play at a given time, following a semi-random sequence, so that the overall story can always be presented from a different and unpredictable perspective. One hidden computer, with an ad-hoc designed software and dedicated protocol, will serve as the director for all the wirelessly controlled audiovisual modules. 

These modules comprise a video display and a speaker, sitting on top of a pole, at different heights from the ground, and placed unevenly around the perimeter of the installation space, so that the visitor can either sit in the center or walk around to casually follow the presentation of the story from any given position.

At times, when one unit is displaying an interviewer character, the others will show other elements that can either belong to that particular witness or just form a neutral background to the story. Other times, all the displays will show one section of the same “ambient” elements of the story, that can be a natural or artificial environment, with or without details, supported by a specific soundtrack or sound (non-spoken) “memory”.

 To complement the “atmosphere” of the installation, a special light diffusion system and soundscape will be designed and programmed by TeZ so as to follow the unpredictability of the video sequence. 

Seven light modules, comprising an RGB led strip and wireless microcontroller, will be installed at the back of seven video modules, evenly spread in the installation space, and they’ll reproduce the average color of the video frames currently playing. This will create an uncanny connection of the ambient light in the room with actual video, as such reinforcing the “mood” of the clip. 

The soundscape will be designed as a generative composition, remixing various sound elements connected to the content of the videoclips (field recordings, ethnic instruments and objects, voices, etc)  especially processed to meet the emotional content of the installation.Ultimately, the idea is to design a non-linear documentary, an ever changing dramaturgy, that stays coherent to the big plot of the story yet following aleatory strategies to always surprise both the viewers of the installation and us, the creators.
